Towers of power

A short history of UChicago’s tallest buildings.

At 207 feet, Rockefeller Chapel has been the skyscraper of UChicago since 1928; John D. Rockefeller’s gift stipulated that no building could be taller. But it’s not the tallest structure ever built on campus. That honor goes to the 264-foot Ferris wheel, which stood for a year on the Midway at the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893.
